Aylesbury, the thriving county town of Buckinghamshire, sits on the edge of the beautiful Chiltern Hills in the Home Counties. Its traditional market still survives from the 13th century and sits comfortably alongside the town’s many modern facilities.

With its prominent position on Gatehouse Road, our care home offers a haven of calm and tranquility within private landscaped grounds, a few minutes from Aylesbury town centre.

Our home has been purpose-built to the highest modern standards to provide 24-hour nursing care for frail elderly residents as well as those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia.

We have six separate and well appointed living areas within our 90 bed registration, each accommodating 15 residents. All bedrooms are especially large and have full en-suite w.c. and shower. There is a variety of day-rooms throughout the home, including a library, gym/rehabilitation, second-floor conservatory, activities room and private dining room (for special family dinners/birthday celebrations) as well as lounges and dining rooms (some with doors to the gardens, others with balconies) – all of which increase choice and enhance the comfort of our residents.

Spring Events & Activities – Join Us

Monday to Friday, 10.30am – 11.00am. Kinesis One Gym Sessions. Supervised gym sessions are available every morning on the Kinesis One. Booking is essential.

Every Monday, 2.00pm onwards. iPad Sensory Sessions. iPads are now proving to be an innovative way to enhance the lives of people and especially for those living dementia. Light and easy to handle, iPads provide an effective way to engage, stimulate and reminisce with. Join our intuitive sensory iPad sessions at Avondale. Booking is essential.

Tuesday 1st April, 2.30pm. Piano Hour Social. Join our pianist Karen for an hour of easy listening music with a glass of wine and canapés.

Wednesday 9th April, 2.30pm. Poetry and Prose Social. An Afternoon of poetry, prose and conversation in the library.

Friday 11th April, 2.00pm. Easter Flower Arranging. Join our ever popular flower arranging class with Trudy and an Easter, spring theme.

Tuesday 22nd April, 2.00pm. Earth Day. Celebrate this international day of responsibility and harmony with the earth, by enjoying an afternoon of events.

Wednesday 23rd April, 2.30pm. St. Georges Day. Come and celebrate St. George’s day in our pub with some Old English Ale and a pub quiz.

Chris Packham has been a firm favourite with fans of nature TV programmes for a number of years. Celebrated wildlife photographer, he is also an award-winning ornithologist.

Chris shared his intimate knowledge of birdlife across the British Isles at a recent talk given at Porthaven’s Avondale Care Home in Buckinghamshire earlier this year with a fascinating talk called “Birds of the British Isles”

Chris was certainly able to inform and entertain, in equal measures, a captivated crowd at the care home with his enthralling talk.

Chris’s talk was followed by a question and answer session which lasted longer than expected…and a delicious light lunch for residents and guests.

Colour in the Home with Farrow & Ball

On February 27th, Avondale care home played host to an inspirational talk on how to transform your home, given by International Colour Consultant, Joa Studholme. The day comprised of an informative talk with Joa in the morning, followed by a helpful question and answer session and a delicious lunch afterwards.

A Royal Jewel For Every Occasion – Avondale Event

On Thursday 21st November, Avondale Care Home played host to an entertaining and informative talk from Susan Rumfitt, an independent jewellery specialist and one of the team of specialists on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, entitled a Royal jewel for every occasion.

From Henry VIII to the Duchess of Cambridge, this talk focused on a variety of Royal Jewels which have caused wonder and mayhem over the last 500 years.

As well as the delightful talk, the afternoon comprised of a light lunch and a valuation session where residents and guests were able to bring along their cherished items for valuation.

Avondale plays host to a baking demonstration from Great British Bake Offs’ Brendan Lynch

On Thursday 24th October, from 10:30am to 1:45pm, Avondale care home was pleased to host a wonderful days baking, hosted by one of The Great British Bake Offs’ favourite bakers Brendan Lynch, who gave a baking demonstration and answered baking related questions from invited guests.

A celebrity gardener brought the delights of summer gardening to Avondale

Residents, families and visitors to Avondale Care Home in Aylesbury enjoyed a major event this month featuring an Open Day talk and afternoon tea with Frances Tophill from ITV’s ‘Love your Garden’.

On Thursday 20th June, Francis Tophill from ITV’s ‘Love your Garden’ visited Avondale to give a talk on the history of some of our most beloved shrubs and flowers that have become established in Britain over the centuries including roses, jasmine, rhododendron and azaleas. The Open Day afforded visitors the chance to view the home and enjoy the hospitality of Avondale with afternoon tea and to ask Frances all manner of questions on gardening etiquette, shrubs and blooms.

Frances will be returning to Avondale for a gardening demonstration and second Open Day talk in the near future.

Avondale home manager, Shaun Canavan said, “these open days exemplify how committed we are to maintaining links for our residents with the wider community”.
