GB Paralympic Basketball Star inspires audience at Prestbury House

Prestbury House Care Home strives to uplift and create enjoyable days for all.

Monday 22nd October was indeed no exception to this as the home was delighted to welcome Laurie Williams, star of the GB Paralympic basketball team to talk about her recent Paralympic 2012 experience.

Known as “The Whippet” by her team members, for her speed and agility on court, 20-year Laurie gave a truly inspirational talk about her courageous journey to perform in the 2012 Games.

Wheelchair-bound since she was 18 months old (as a result of a severe viral-infection), Laurie grew to become a highly competitive person, taking part in junior events for disabled athletes, when aged 16 she was spotted at Sale Harriers and offered a try-out for the GB Paralympic Basketball. She was duly selected and gained valuable experience competing in such places as Turkey and the USA for Team GB.

As a Paralympic athlete, Laurie’s training schedule was tough, with emphasis on weights, physiotherapy and skills practice, leading to competitive trips to the USA  and Holland prior to the London Games.

Incredibly, she now begins to focus her attention on preparing towards the 2016 Games in Rio, though government funding is still not assured for our team to compete.

Residents and guests of Prestbury House Care Home enjoyed the event thoroughly.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to welcome such a star in all senses of the word. I’m sure we all felt uplifted and also a little humbled by Laurie’s courage to overcome adversity and her positivity and determination to succeed”, commented Trudy Nazer the acting General Manager of Prestbury House. “The need to focus on one’s abilities rather than what one cannot do is an enduring message for us all.”
