Huntington’s Disease Care and Support

What is Huntington’s Disease and how can we help?

Huntington’s is an inherited condition that damages certain nerve cells in the brain. This brain damage gets progressively worse over time and can affect movement, cognition and behaviour.

Later and more complicated symptoms of Huntington’s include mobility problems, dementia, and problems with speaking and swallowing. Our skilled team of nurses and carers provide not only physical support, but emotional support too, to every resident and their family. Care plans are developed in discussion with each individual and with family member input, and where needed, with the involvement of other healthcare professionals such as speech and language therapists.

Currently there is no cure for Huntington’s but with expert nursing care at a Porthaven care home, we can help manage the symptoms allowing your loved one to maintain their independence and quality of life.

All Porthaven homes have numerous features to help deal with any physical or nursing requirements caused by Huntington’s, but the overriding ethos of Porthaven is to maintain warm, homely and non-institutional environments. Every resident is able to relax in his or her own spacious private bedroom and en suite wetroom, or participate in as many of the social activities a Porthaven home has to offer as each resident chooses.

It’s not just the surroundings which make a huge difference to caring for people living with Huntington’s. Our chefs are trained to produce fresh, home cooked, nutritious meals which encourage our residents to eat and participate in the very social activity of enjoying food and our activities and wellbeing coordinators and care staff are all trained to provide stimulating individual and group activities. When excellent care combines with good nutrition, physical and mental stimulation, well-being and contentment are promoted, and that is what we wish to achieve for each and every Porthaven resident.

Above all, care is delivered with dignity by a caring, dedicated and skilled team in every Porthaven home. If you are thinking about full time care for yourself or a loved one, please contact your local Porthaven care home now and see what makes us different.
