Bourne Wood Manor Former WWII Land Girl Celebrates 102nd Birthday Two Days Before VE Day 75th Anniversary

Helen, who has been at the home since just after it opened in 2018, has celebrated her 100th, 101st and now her 102nd birthday whilst living at the home although this time, under slightly unusual circumstances with the UK lockdown measures in place.

Home Manager, Ileana Stan said, ‘Helen is a much loved resident here at Bourne Wood Manor and has already celebrated two other centenary birthdays with us! Under normal circumstances, we would have loved to have done more to celebrate as the residents here all love a good party, but with restrictions on movement and social distancing, we had to be creative.’ She went on to say, ‘Our wonderful chef made a homemade birthday cake and we all took to the garden in glorious weather for a socially distanced garden party. Although it wasn’t the 102nd birthday celebration we had planned, or with Helens’ family and friends present, we still were able to enjoy the day with Helen at the centre of the fun.’

Ileana explained that Helen is an active member of the home, and at 102 years young, she participates in chair based yoga classes, day trips out and one of her particular passions is water colour painting. Helen participated in a photo shoot at the home and is featured in the Bourne Wood Manor brochure and on the Porthaven website.

With the UK having just celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day, Helen is one of few people who remembers the Victory Celebrations from 1945 and in fact, was a serving member of the Land Army during the war. Helen commented that her birthday was ‘Amazing’ and praised Bourne Wood Manor for its’ ‘Lovely atmosphere’.
