Here at Porthaven Care Homes we appreciate excellent food, and we know our residents do too. Not only is proper nutrition and hydration essential to maintaining good health, but the enjoyment of freshly prepared, delicious meals also assists in the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of those in our care.
Porthaven is lucky enough to be partnered with renowned chefs John Wood and Mark Hix MBE, who inspire and mentor our chefs, as well as working with them throughout the year at different training events and competitions. The result of these partnerships is high-performing chefs delivering menus that are restaurant quality, appetising and well-balanced for our residents, relatives and friends to enjoy.
John Wood is an outstanding international restaurant consultant and former Michelin-starred chef that has been mentoring our chefs since the early days of Porthaven. He is the co-founder of restaurant kitchen software, Kitchen CUT, which we have used in our homes since 2016.
In 2022, celebrated chef, restaurateur and food writer, Mark Hix MBE became another mentor for our chefs and kitchen teams. He is the author of an impressive twelve cookbooks and his restaurant The Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis, serves fresh seafood brought directly from local fishermen.
Mark has already been stirring up the creative juices in our teams, having worked alongside us in the latest Porthaven Hospitality Challenge, an internal competition held annually to encourage friendly competition with the end goal of becoming Porthaven Chef of the Year. Several of our chefs have also had the honour of spending a day with Mark foraging, learning about his approach of taking very few simple and delicious freshly foraged ingredients and turning them into mouth-watering, nutritious meals.
Our residents are not just limited to meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner. All of our homes serve morning coffee and cake, as well as afternoon tea, and fresh fruit and snacks are readily available throughout the day. Fresh water, fruit juices and other drinks are always on offer to ensure our residents maintain good hydration and for those wanting something a little lighter on any given day, there is always a light bites menu readily available.
While our residents do have the option to eat in their rooms if desired, many individuals in our care value the company of others at mealtimes. For this reason, Porthaven homes have dining rooms that provide restaurant service so that everybody can dine with their friends and discuss the varied events of the day.
In addition to our normal dining services, at every Porthaven care home we offer a dedicated private dining room, where residents can dine with their friends, family or other residents as they so desire. The room can be booked for special family occasions and gatherings, and our chefs love nothing more than the opportunity to showcase their skills by catering for private events and playing their part in making special days even more special, by creating exquisite food fit for the occasion.
Continuing our commitment to excellence and ensuring our residents ‘live well in our care’, we source our food and wine from only the finest traders. We work with Campbell Brothers, who have been butchers since 1902, to source meat from around the UK and Ireland. Our wine is supplied by Berry Bros & Rudd, who have been established in London for over 300 years. With these excellent suppliers our residents can eat and drink knowing that everything they consume is of the highest quality.
