Coffee morning presentation with Oxfam’s Mary Saunders

We were visited by Mary who gave an insightful talk on her personal experiences working with indigenous people in an Adibashi village in the northwest corner of Bangladesh. Working with local partner organisations, Mary has been involved in a number of projects including helping to set up preschools where 4 to 6 year olds would learn Bengali and other subjects, helping to create structures in the villages to ensure that women had a say and played an active role in the community. This included setting up mothers’ forums and ensuring that the Adibashi people were aware of their rights regarding ownership of land and payment for work, assisting the villagers in getting back their land when it had been illegally removed from them, and helping them obtain a fair wage for their agricultural work.
