Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care

At Porthaven, each of our homes provides a safe, supportive and homely environment dedicated to the care of those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

What is Alzheimer’s and how can we help?

Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, but there are several other types of dementia. Symptoms can include a loss of memory, confusion, problems with cognition and problems with speech. Dementia is not a disease in itself. Rather, dementia is a term used to describe a group of symptoms caused by disorders that affect the brain and prevent it working properly.

Given the very complex nature of dementia, symptoms vary with each individual and it is by understanding this that we are able to provide the very best support to those who live with us.

From the moment you make an enquiry at a Porthaven care home, we begin to build a comprehensive picture of your loved one including life history, family, likes and dislikes, hobbies and social preferences. This helps us understand each resident on a personal level and this is the unique foundation of each resident’s care plan.

If you decide the time is right to move your loved one into a Porthaven care home, our trained care staff will carry out a pre-admission assessment which gives us additional information about each resident’s needs and is used to ensure every resident we care for is supported to live a happy and fulfilled life and is encouraged and enabled to continue living with dignity and independence.

All Porthaven homes have numerous features endorsed by the leading research centres in the UK to help deal with the progressive nature of dementia including safe and secure gardens to enjoy fresh air and outdoor activity, but the overriding ethos of Porthaven is to maintain warm, homely and non-institutional environments. Every resident living with dementia is able to relax in his or her own spacious private bedroom and en suite wetroom or participate in as many of the social activities a Porthaven home has to offer as each resident chooses.

It’s not just the surroundings which make a huge difference to caring for people living with dementia. Our chefs are trained to produce fresh, home cooked, nutritious meals which encourage our residents to eat and participate in the very social activity of enjoying food and our activities and wellbeing coordinators and care staff are all trained to provide stimulating individual and group activities. When excellent care combines with good nutrition, physical and mental stimulation, well-being and contentment are promoted, and that is what we wish to achieve for each and every Porthaven resident.

‘The care is given with insight into who Dad was and is, evidence based, Dad has settled in and it feels as though he can relax a little. The staff ask about Dad’s background, family opinion and keep us informed about dad’s needs, and use this information to keep an up to date care plan.’
