Motor Neurone Disease Care and Support

Every Porthaven care home provides expert nursing care to support those living with the effects of a life-changing condition, such as Motor Neurone Disease.

What is Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and how can we help?

MND is a rare neurological condition that causes the deterioration and loss of function of the motor system (the cells and nerves in the brain and spinal cord which control the muscles in our bodies). This results in weakness and wasting of the muscles. MND is progressive and symptoms worsen over time resulting in the need for ongoing care.

At Porthaven, we understand that a progressive illness like MND, needs a flexible approach to care. Our care plans are developed in discussion with you and your loved ones to ensure that they are fully personalised. MND is a complex condition and our nurses and carers are trained to provide support for the symptoms associated with MND. We may also work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals, including neurologists, physiotherapists, dieticians and counsellors.

All Porthaven homes have numerous features to help deal with any physical or nursing requirements caused by MND, but the overriding ethos of Porthaven is to maintain warm, homely and life-changing environments. Every resident is able to relax in his or her own spacious private bedroom and en suite wetroom, or participate in as many of the social activities a Porthaven home has to offer as each resident chooses.

It’s not just the surroundings which make a huge difference to caring for people living with MND. Our chefs are trained to produce fresh, home cooked, nutritious meals which encourage our residents to eat and participate in the very social activity of enjoying food and our activities and wellbeing coordinators and care staff are all trained to provide stimulating individual and group activities. When excellent care combines with good nutrition, physical and mental stimulation, well-being and contentment are promoted, and that is what we wish to achieve for each and every Porthaven resident.

Above all, care is delivered with dignity by a caring, dedicated and skilled team in every Porthaven home.

“My father was well cared for. He was treated with the greatest respect and dignity. The staff were all excellent and cared for the family as well, especially when Dad passed away. It was Dad’s home and we were able to treat it as though it was.”
