Una Turns 101!

Our lovely resident Una turned 101 last month so it was only right we celebrated such a milestone birthday by making it as special as we possibly could.

Una has lived with us at Savernake View for three and a half years and what a pleasure it has been! Born in Clifton in Bristol and brought up in nearby Clevedon, Una was married to Kenneth for over 60 years and together they had three children – two daughters and a son. Una is the proud grandmother of three grandchildren too and says she loved to cook.

Before the war, Una worked at a COE orphanage helping with the children. When her husband was posted to the Far East and knowing he wouldn’t return until after the war was over, Una joined the Army for 3.5 years taking on the important role of wireless radio operative. The position involved listening in, searching and intercepting the airways for enemy messages. Afterwards, Una trained as an officer – part of this training involved scrubbing floors to rise through the ranks – and was one of only two trainees to pass out of a total of nineteen!

To mark Una’s birthday, our residents made cards featuring different photos of her, which made her laugh a lot! During our clay making activity, we devoted the session to making paper weights to hold down helium balloons which we used during her party. Everyone sang ‘happy birthday’, we played all of her favourite songs and we especially enjoyed the beautiful birthday cake made by our kitchen team.
